US State Department voices concern over India's ties with Russia
A US State Department representative stated that the US expressed its concern to India about its relationship with Russia amid the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine
This was reported by Reuters.
India has been under pressure from the West to distance itself from Russia. However, New Delhi has consistently maintained that it cannot do so due to its long-standing economic ties with Moscow.
During his first visit to Russia since the start of the war, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi posted on social media that the meeting "will surely go a long way in further cementing the bonds of friendship."
A US State Department representative emphasized that the US would consider Modi's public statements to understand his stance.
"But as I said, we have made quite clear directly with India our concerns about their relationship with Russia. And so we would hope (that) India and any other country when they engage with Russia would make clear that Russia should respect the U.N. Charter, should respect Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity," emphasized the representative.
- It should be noted that on July 8, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi flew to Moscow to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
