We need to prepare for very difficult Turkey, US relations — expert Semyvolos
Ihor Semyvolos, director of the Association of Middle East Studies, said that the key problem in relations between Washington and Ankara is the aircraft that Congress refuses to give to Turkey
He expressed this opinion on Espreso.
Semyvolos commented on the ongoing relationship between the USA and Turkey.
"After the presidential election, Turkey is currently taking a break. The new Erdogan government has taken office and they need to stabilize the domestic political and economic situation, such as stabilizing the lira. Many Turkish ministries also have new leaders who are occupied with staffing and exploring new development options. This is why we are observing a pause in the relationship," he explained.
Ihor Semyvolos suggested that the Americans could utilize this pause to address the challenging situation between the US and Turkey and attempt to move forward.
"We should keep in mind that the main issue in this situation is related to aircraft. Congress strongly opposes providing Turkey with aircraft as they could potentially be used in Syria. Additionally, Erdogan's stance on Sweden and other NATO matters is a concern. Turkey has once again obstructed the Alliance's decision to develop joint approaches against Russian aggression. Turkey will continue to make subtle indications, so we need to be prepared for difficult relations between Washington and Ankara. The only factor that could change the situation is if Russia becomes weaker and Turkey loses interest. However, I have doubts about this possibility because a weakened Russia might become even more appealing to Turkey," Semyvolos stated.
