Steinmeier calls on Chinese president to use his influence on Putin to end war in Ukraine

On December 20, Frank-Walter Steinmeier had an hour-long telephone conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"Steinmeier underlined the common interest of China and Europe in an end to the war with the prerequisite that Russian troops withdraw," the newspaper writes.

The German president asked Xi Jinping to use his influence on Russia and influence Putin regarding the war in Ukraine.

Steinmeier also thanked the President of China "for the clear rejection of nuclear threats by Russia."

 During the conversation, the President of Germany confirmed Germany's determination to continue helping Ukraine. Steinmeier emphasized that Europe will not back down from the Russian Federation's threats and is taking precautionary measures against the energy crisis.

Steinmeier added that Russian aggression strengthened Ukraine's defense capabilities and European cohesion, and Putin fundamentally miscalculated.
