Russian oligarch Abramovich promises to give Ukraine GBP 2.3 billion from sale of Chelsea club
Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich will give Ukraine GBP 2.3 billion he received from the sale of Chelsea football club, but the money is still blocked by the UK government
The Telegraph reports that although formally it was Abramovich who received the money from the financial deal, in reality he had no right to dispose of it without the permission of the UK authorities. And the entire sum was simply blocked in the accounts.
Therefore, the oligarch promised to donate the money to a fund set up to benefit the victims of the Kremlin's invasion. However, there were problems with this, as the businessman is also under sanctions in the European Union, and therefore cannot transfer the money to the charity.
Finally, all obstacles have been removed. The funds will be transferred to a foundation headed by Mike Penrose, former executive director of UNICEF in the UK.
According to him, the money will be used for humanitarian aid, including medical, trauma, and surgical equipment, and to meet the needs of the war-affected population near the front line (food, nutrition, basic services, education, and medical support).
