Russia is losing its front advantage in heavy weapons — Bloomberg
New figures on military aid to Ukraine indicate a significant shift in the balance of heavy weapons on the country's battlefields after more than 16 months of war
Bloomberg writes about it.
It is noted that the updated Ukraine Support Tracker database, maintained by Germany's Kiel Institute for the World Economy, reports that the parties helping Kyiv have delivered 471 new tanks since the start of the war, while 286 have yet to arrive, even though the number of new pledges slowed down.
Based on open-source counts of lost or captured equipment by the intelligence group Oryx, these figures show that the Ukrainian tank fleet has grown since the beginning of the invasion, while the Russian tank fleet has halved.
The gap also narrowed in terms of artillery and multiple-launch rocket systems, although by much smaller margins. The data on tanks in particular tallied with parliamentary testimony given by UK Chief of the Defense Staff Tony Radakin.
"Russia has lost nearly half the combat effectiveness of its army. Last year it fired 10 million artillery shells but at best can produce 1 million shells a year. It has lost 2,500 tanks and at best can produce 200 tanks a year," Radakin told the legislature’s defense committee.
HIMARS in Ukraine
This is an American rocket artillery system designed for "hit and run" tactics. It is equipped with guided high-precision rockets, tactical and ballistic missiles, and has a range of up to 499 km. Its primary purpose is to eliminate artillery systems, air defense units, fire support systems, trucks, combat vehicles, and armored personnel carriers concentrated in specific areas. Additionally, it provides essential fire support to its own units and support assets.
On June 23, 2022, the first American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems arrived in Ukraine. They played a crucial role in the preparation and conduct of successful operations against the Russian army.
According to the US Army, by mid-August 2022, Ukraine had destroyed over 100 high-value Russian targets using HIMARS.
On June 27, 2023, the US announced a new USD 500 million aid package for Ukraine, which included ammunition for Patriot and HIMARS, as well as armored vehicles.
According to Ukraine's Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar, as of July 4, 2023, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have managed to retain all their HIMARS systems despite Russia's continuous efforts to target them.
