Royal Marines confirm special operations in Ukraine after February 24
Around 350 marines have helped evacuate the British embassy from Kyiv to Poland earlier this year, and in April they have returned to Kyiv to guard the embassy
This was reported by a senior British general, according to the Times.
Lieutenant General Robert Magowan, former commander of the Royal Marines, said the Marines were involved in supporting operations in an "hugely sensitive environment" and the missions carried "high levels of political and military risk."
He described how 350 marines helped evacuate the British Embassy from Kyiv to Poland earlier this year. They returned to Kyiv in April to guard the embassy as Britain sought to re-establish a diplomatic presence following the retreat of Russian troops.
The British Ministry of Defence has previously acknowledged the presence of infantry soldiers in Ukraine to protect embassy staff (up to 30 servicemen were reportedly involved). However, this is the first time the military has admitted that British soldiers were involved in special operations on the territory of Ukraine.
In addition to participation in operations, Magowan praised the role of the Royal Marines in training the Ukrainian military. The Times reported earlier this year that British commandos are in Kyiv helping to train local troops.
"We have been actively involved in training hundreds of Ukrainian troops over the summer. We also plan to train Ukrainian marines," Magowan said.
