Rishi Sunak takes Russian aggression in Ukraine as seriously as his predecessors
British Ambassador Melinda Simmons said British new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak takes Russia's aggression in Ukraine as seriously as Truss and Johnson and Great Britain's policy towards Ukraine is unlikely to change
She said this in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.
She noted that Russian invasion into the territory of Ukraine is no less a priority for Sunak than for his predecessors.
"I don't think anyone could accuse Rishi Sunak of not prioritizing issue of Russian invasion of Ukraine or not considering it important. He has some pretty important domestic economic issues to attend to, and he does it. But I don't think he takes this invasion any less seriously than Liz Truss or Boris Johnson", Simmons said.
She also noted that Sunak was British chancellor before and during Russian invasion of Ukraine, and it was Treasury that he led that played a leading role in imposing sanctions.
"They are working very closely with Foreign Office on this, but lead has been Treasury itself, and UK has sanctioned more individuals and entities than anyone else in the world. We have sanctioned almost 1,200 people, around 120 entities. By the way, they concern Iranian individuals and organizations associated with the drone program," the ambassador said.
Simmons emphasized that President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, was the first foreign leader Sunak spoke with as Prime Minister. The ambassador emphasizes that this was the official's own initiative.
"I have no concerns about Rishi Sunak's commitment. I don't think there will be any change at all in terms of our politics going forward", she says.
