New US aid package includes depleted uranium shells for Ukraine for first time
The new US military aid package for Ukraine will include armor-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium for the first time
Reuters reported the information.
This information was confirmed to journalists by two American officials. The news agency also got acquainted with the relevant document.
These shells, which can help destroy Russian tanks, are part of a new military aid package for Ukraine to be presented next week.
The ammunition could be launched from US Abrams tanks, which, according to a person familiar with the matter, will be delivered to Ukraine in the coming weeks.
According to one official, the forthcoming aid package is estimated to range between USD 240 million and USD 375 million, contingent on its components. The sources noted that both the cost and contents of the package have not been conclusively determined.
This will be the first time the US has supplied such ammunition and is likely to cause controversy in the country, especially with a presidential election approaching in a year.
- In March, UK Deputy Defense Secretary Annabel Goldie said that, in addition to tanks, the country would provide Ukraine with depleted uranium shells.
