Moldova hopes to resolve Transnistria conflict after Ukraine’s victory – Sandu
Moldova expects that after Ukraine's victory in the war with Russia, geopolitical conditions for a peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict may emerge
This was stated by Moldovan President Maia Sandu, as quoted by Radio Moldova.
"We live in peace thanks to the Ukrainian army. And we have also done everything during this time to prevent our country from being drawn into the war, to maintain order and peace in our society, to fight against lies," she said.
Sandu added that the country is interested in resolving the Transnistrian conflict.
"I repeat once again that the solutions we see are only peaceful. Perhaps, when Ukraine wins this war and regains its territories, there will be a geopolitical opportunity that will allow us to resolve the conflict peacefully," the Moldovan president emphasized.
In addition, according to Sandu, the Transnistrian problem will be solved gradually, "because everything is quite complicated," and the reintegration process should be carried out in a way that does not lead to "further weakening of the Moldovan state and democratic processes."
What is known about Transnistria conflict
For the second time on February 23, the Russian Ministry of Defense issued a report that Ukraine was preparing to invade Transnistria. Despite the fact that in the morning the Moldovan authorities had already denied this information.
American analysts suggest that the Kremlin is creating conditions for false flag operations on the international border of Chernihiv region and Moldova.
In May, it was reported that Sandu believed that EU membership could protect Moldova from becoming Russia's next target and expressed hope that negotiations would begin "in the coming months." She later added that Russia is not a strategic partner for the state because of its actions.
After that, the protesters called on the government to write into the Constitution of Moldova its goal of joining the EU, to ensure the earliest possible start of negotiations on accession to the Union, to support the strengthening of state structures, and to complete the interconnection of Moldova's and the EU's energy networks to rid the country of Russian blackmail.
