"It was stab in the back": Danilov explaines why Russian attack from Belarusian territory was unexpected
Oleksiy Danilov, Secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council (NSDC), said that a few days before Russia launched its full-scale attack, the Belarussian military leadership had guaranteed that Russia would not attack Ukraine from Belarusian soil.
Danilov stated this in an interview with Babel.
"Let me explain why it was a stab in the back for us. A few days before the full-scale invasion, there was direct communication between our Minister of Defense and the Minister of Defense of Belarus. He guaranteed, gave the word of a general, an officer, that this would not happen. The next day, the head of our border service talked with his colleague also on this topic, and he also assured him 100% that there will be no offensive," Danilov said.
He admitted that the Ukrainian leadership had no idea that a full-scale war would begin in this format.
"In general, in our understanding of the situation, we really did not have an idea of this particular format of the war. We expected that there could be a Donetsk, Luhansk direction. As an option, Kharkiv, but we did not expect such aggression as on February 24, you understand? But as for the preparation , I do not agree at all with those who say that we are not prepared. I am an informed person, but where was my large family on February 24? Here. All my children, grandchildren, relatives were here. I did not tell a single person in Ukraine, that there will be a war on February 24," Danilov assured.
