Former Chinese leader Jiang Zemin, who led the Chinese Communist Party from 1989 to 2002 and was the head of the country from 1993 to 2003, died at the age of 97.

Jiang Zemin died at the age of 96 in Shanghai. He became the leader of the People's Republic of China in 1993 and left the post in 2003. According to the National Information Agency, the cause of Jiang Zemin's death was leukemia and multiple organ failure.
Jiang Zemin succeeded as General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Zhao Jianyang, who supported the demands of the protesters during the Tiananmen Square protests and was suspended and placed under house arrest.
Jiang Zemin made the theory of three representations part of the party program of the Chinese Communist Party. According to it, the Chinese intellectuals are equal in political rights to workers and peasants. In addition, this theory opened the way to the Communist Party and management structures for private entrepreneurs.
