China isn't interested in Ukraine's victory - MP Merezhko
Member of the Ukrainian Parliament and Co-Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China Oleksandr Merezhko told Espreso whether Beijing is interested in Moscow's defeat and whether Ukraine-China partnership is possible
The Ukrainian lawmaker says there are several reasons why Ukraine cannot rely on China to help Ukraine resist Russian aggression.
“On the eve of the Russian Federation's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, China and Russia created a strategic partnership without limits. In reality, Russia is currently a junior partner of China and it's becoming more and more dependent on China. For this reason, we cannot rely and trust China at all. Moreover, Beijing provides economic help to Moscow by buying in large quantities Russian natural resources. In fact, it finances the Russian war machine. We shouldn't also forget that China is spreading Russian propaganda regarding the Russian war against Ukraine,” he explained.
The co-chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China believes that Beijing is not interested in Kyiv's victory, and the Ukraine-China partnership ended with the start of Russia's full-scale war.
“As for me, the strategic partnership between Ukraine and China ended on February 24th. I don't think it's realistic to get China on our side. China isn't interested in Russia's defeat. Russia is a junior partner to China and China is trying to assimilate Russia and to turn it into its vassal. For this reason, China is not interested in Ukraine's victory. I don't believe that China is sincere in its attempts to seek peace. Even though it tries to pretend to be neutral, it's actually a kind of neutrality on the side of Russia,” Oleksandr Merezhko concluded.
