"China is using the situation Putin got himself into by starting a war against Ukraine. It is beneficial for China to use Russia's weakness to buy cheap oil and gas and increase its influence on the Russian economy," Koval said.

The expert noted that the Chinese president never said that he would support Russia.

"The President of China, on the contrary, said that Russia's war against Ukraine is not what we wanted, so the contradictions between the states are not resolved. China does not help Russia the same way Iran does. America clearly warned China that if it helps Russia to circumvent sanctions, then China itself is subject to sanctions. China wants to avoid this scenario. China reinsures itself and not helping Russia as Putin wants," Koval added.
