China decides to triple its nuclear component - international expert Poyta
Yuriy Poyta, head of the Asia-Pacific section at the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies, noted that China is preparing its nuclear capabilities to deter the United States, NATO, and alliances from interfering in a possible conflict in the Taiwan Strait
He spoke about this on Espreso TV.
"If we look at China's nuclear potential, it is the third largest in terms of the number of nuclear warheads, despite the fact that China possesses all three components of nuclear weapons, the so-called nuclear triad. Nevertheless, the number of nuclear weapons currently in China's arsenal is approximately 350-400 warheads, which is insignificant compared to Russia and the United States. However, China is learning the lessons from the Russian-Ukrainian war and concludes that the strategic nuclear deterrence of Russia has been and is quite effective," the international expert explained.
Yuri Poyta added that the Chinese experts he spoke with said that Russia's nuclear blackmail of the West at the level of political leadership, media and various experts has deterred NATO and the United States from direct intervention and restrained them from providing Ukraine with long-range weapons.
"Therefore, China concludes that nuclear deterrence is effective, and now we see publications that China has decided to triple its nuclear component. It seems that by 2030 or 2035, it should not be 350-400 warheads, but about 1500. This means that China is also preparing its nuclear capability to deter the United States, NATO, and alliances from interfering in a possible conflict in the Taiwan Strait," Poyta commented.
