About 90 Canadian soldiers arrive in UK to train Ukrainian soldiers
About 90 servicemen, mainly from the 3rd Battalion of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, have left Edmonton for the UK, where they will conduct combat training for Ukrainian soldiers under Operation UNIFARE.
This is reported by the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with reference to the Canadian Army.
This training will consist of weapons handling, battlefield first aid, field skills, patrol tactics and the law of armed conflict, it said, and will be aimed at helping the Ukrainian Armed Forces defend their homeland against Russia's ongoing illegal invasion.
On August 4, Canada's Minister of National Defense, the Honorable Anita Anand, announced that Canada had authorized the deployment of Canadian Armed Forces personnel to train recruits of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, which are seeking to augment their ground forces in the face of the ongoing, unprovoked, unjustified and illegal invasion of the Russian Federation.
As part of Operation UNIFIRE, Canada's military training and capacity-building mission in Ukraine, the Canadian Armed Forces will deploy up to 225 military personnel, most of whom will serve as instructors, to the UK, supported by a command and control unit, for an initial deployment of approximately four months.
The first Canadian-led courses will follow a flexible curriculum focusing on the individual skills required for front-line combat, including weapons handling, battlefield first aid, field skills, patrol tactics and the law of armed conflict.
