Putin, Trump talk about peace, but their real goal is Ukraine’s defeat
Polish socio-political figure, journalist, and dissident Adam Michnik noted that Putin and Trump only talk about peace
He spoke about this in an interview with Antin Borkovskyi, host of the Studio West program on Espreso TV.
“What I see in Trump’s logic—and generally in the whole situation—is a repeat of the 1930s. Trump and Putin talk about peace; Chamberlain and Hitler also talked about peace, and for that purpose, Czechoslovakia had to be sacrificed. Today, by following this political path, Trump and Putin jointly propose destroying Ukraine. Europe cannot agree to this. It must be said very clearly and distinctly: we are all Ukrainians; every European is a Ukrainian, and we must identify ourselves with this and stand by this position,” he stated.
The defeat of Ukraine and the victory of Putin would be a defeat for everyone, said the socio-political figure. It is necessary to uphold the idea of European integration, which should remain open to Ukraine. Any real compromise with Putin is impossible.
“This is a chance for Poland, for Europe, and above all, for Ukraine. There is no room for compromises. Putin signs something and then violates it. A Belarusian émigré, Mr. Hastushka, recently said very accurately in Poland that the last thing you should do in politics is trust Putin. He is a liar, a manipulator, a charlatan who has committed war crimes. The only response to this is European integration and support for Ukraine. I don’t know how it will end, but as the Latin saying goes: ‘Do what must be done, and come what may’,” he added.
According to him, if the world is left with a powerless Europe, a deranged U.S. president, a bandit running the Kremlin and Russia, and a calm dictator in China just waiting to join this unholy trinity that will divide the world—this will be a catastrophe for Europe.
“Europe is behaving better than we could have hoped two years ago. I don’t know how far and steadily it will develop such a policy, but we must do everything to support it. I also believe in a different scenario. Since the first victim of Putin’s policy was Russian democracy, at some point all of this in Russia must collapse, because Putin’s policy is leading Russia to disaster. And Trump’s policy is leading the U.S. to a disaster whose form is unknown, but it is inevitable. There is hope, but one must be patient, cautious, and also brave. And I hope that this will be the course of Polish politics,” he concluded.
