U.S. continues talks with Russia on unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine — Zelenskyy
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the United States is persuading the Russians to agree to an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine, which would enable the start of dialogue
He said this during a working visit to the Chernihiv region.
According to him, during negotiations in Saudi Arabia, the Russians did not agree to an unconditional ceasefire, but the U.S. continues to persuade the aggressor country.
“We agreed to an unconditional ceasefire. Russia has not agreed to this yet — we can see that. Although we know that discussions between the Americans and the Russians on this topic are ongoing. There are non-public talks,” the president noted.
In his view, persuading the Russians to cease fire could happen in the coming weeks or months. After that, the parties may begin dialogue to end the war.
“I think this could be done as soon as possible — in the coming weeks, maybe months. It could happen in different ways — sometimes it happens suddenly, especially this part of ending the war — the hot phase. This is a complete ceasefire, and we would very much like it to be unconditional. But then there will be time — for example, the first agreements could take a month or two, and honestly, that’s okay. But it is a chance for countries to start diplomatic options in various dialogue formats,” Zelenskyy said.
- On March 25, another round of talks between Ukrainian and American delegations took place in Riyadh. The parties agreed to a 30-day partial ceasefire. Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow agreed to ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea. Russia also committed to halting attacks on energy infrastructure.
- However, Russia has repeatedly violated the terms of the 30-day partial ceasefire. For example, on April 1, Russian forces struck an energy facility in Kherson, again breaching the agreement with the U.S.
- On April 1, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that Russia does not share U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to ending the war in Ukraine.
- The following day, President Zelenskyy expressed confidence that pressure on Russia would eventually force it to cease fire.
