French official claims who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity, the issue will be discussed at a joint meeting of French and German officials on Sunday, January 22.
"The subject is complicated and hasn’t been settled yet in Paris. But we are thinking about it," a French official told reporters before confirming the upcoming meeting on Sunday. "We’ll see what gets decided at the joint French-German Cabinet meeting."
Politico reported that Western officials fear that Ukraine has little time left before Russia launches a new, broader offensive and that this will likely require the supply of tanks to bolster its defense.
Poland is ready to provide Ukraine with 14 Leopard tanks and hopes that other NATO countries will follow suit and manage to assemble at least an armored brigade.
Germany may decide to provide Ukraine with Leopard tanks as early as this week.
Finland has stated that it could provide tanks to Ukraine if other countries do so first and a corresponding project to help Ukraine is launched at the European level. On January 17, the country confirmed its readiness to participate in a coalition of countries that will provide tanks to Ukraine.
Sources told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper that if the German government decides to supply Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in the near future, it can transfer 10 to 15 repaired tanks by the end of 2023.
