Russia demands UN Security Council meeting, citing alleged threats from European countries
Russia has urgently called for a UN Security Council meeting, claiming that European countries are blocking efforts to peacefully resolve the war in Ukraine
This was announced by Dmitry Polyansky, First Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN.
He specifically referred to European countries as sponsors of the "Kyiv regime" and said they’ve been invited to a May 29 meeting to discuss the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.
In response, Moscow decided to act "in a mirror way" and called for its own meeting "due to threats to international peace and security caused by the actions of several European states that are trying to sabotage efforts to peacefully resolve the Ukrainian crisis."
Russia expects the meeting to take place on May 30, 2025.
“Our enemies at the UN, who were waiting for the outcome of the Istanbul talks and President Trump’s reaction, seem to have run out of patience,” said Russia’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN. “It’s important for them to keep the Ukrainian issue active in the Security Council, even if it means risking a misstep in judging the right tone for the new U.S. administration.”
- At the same time, Russia has been heavily attacking Ukraine over the past nights. On the night of Monday, May 26, Russian forces launched a record 355 Shahed drones and 9 Kh-101 cruise missiles at Ukraine.
