Zelenskyy arrives in Germany to discuss peace efforts, long-range arms with Merz
On Wednesday, May 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Germany for a visit. He met with Chancellor Friedrich Merz
Bild and Suspilne reported the information, citing the Ukrainian President’s Office.
It was reported that Volodymyr Zelenskyy landed in the military zone of Berlin-Schönefeld Airport.
Around 1:00 p.m. (Kyiv time), the President met with German Chancellor Merz. The official ceremony was also attended by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, Head of the President’s Office Andriy Yermak, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov.
According to the website of the German Federal Chancellor, the meeting with Merz is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. local time. After that, Zelenskyy plans to meet with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
“The visit will focus on Germany’s support for Ukraine and efforts to achieve a ceasefire,” the statement said.
In the afternoon, the two leaders will also meet with representatives of German business.
Speaking to journalists on May 27, Zelenskyy said he would discuss the supply and use of long-range weapons with Merz, Interfax-Ukraine reported.
“There are things we couldn’t talk through earlier because we didn’t have such an extended one-on-one format. And we agreed that the time would come when I’d visit Berlin and we’d discuss them. Among those issues is what you mentioned (the use of long-range weapons), but I haven’t heard any new signals. I’ll probably be able to say more after the meeting,” he said.
- Earlier, Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany, along with the United States, France, and Great Britain, lifted restrictions on the range of their weapons used by Ukraine.
