Trump team undermining negotiations, leaving Europe and Ukraine to steer process – diplomat
Roman Bezsmertnyi, diplomat and former Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of Belarus, believes that the U.S. side is conducting negotiations unprofessionally
He expressed this opinion on Espreso TV.
“I fully understand that it is impossible to predict Donald Trump’s behavior. I’ve said dozens of times what kind of person he is, what decisions he might make, and who he is in the current situation for the United States of America. However, under the current conditions, I want to emphasize once again: a bad partner is better than no partner at all, considering the capabilities he possesses.
Next. The position often voiced now is that Putin is afraid of Donald Trump. That is not true. Trump is afraid of Putin. This is already evident from his behavior.
As of today, the petty work and negotiation process being conducted between both sides, both in closed and open formats, indicate that the U.S. side is handling it unprofessionally. This allows the Kremlin to dominate the negotiation process. From Steve Witkoff to Mike Waltz and Marco Rubio, we are dealing with people who are like students just beginning to understand what is happening. And this seriously weakens the negotiation process,” he noted.
Therefore, Roman Bezsmertnyi believes the negotiation process depends on the clear stance of the Europeans and the Ukrainian side. The United States must be convinced that the Russian dictator Putin only understands the language of force, and thus Ukraine must be provided with weapons.
“Thus, the course of the negotiation process today depends on the clarity of the Europeans’ position and on Ukraine. On their necessary involvement in this process. It’s very important now to find arguments, through UK Prime Minister Starmer and French President Macron, to convince Trump that Europe must be a participant in this negotiation process.
As for the things that complicate these efforts – yes, Europe is uncomfortable, Europe is hurt by these tariffs and duties, but Europe is right to leave room for the reasoning of Donald Trump and the United States of America. We are hurt even more, because Ukraine is paying with human lives, with the lives of children, for the madness coming from Washington, constantly proclaimed by Donald Trump.
In this situation, it is necessary to formulate a clear position and communicate it to both the Europeans and the United States, insisting on restoring and increasing assistance, because to avoid tragedy, we must defend ourselves. But in this situation, the best defense is offense. And the course of events and of the negotiation process only further proves this,” the diplomat emphasized.
