Different approach from the U.S.: Meloni explains Italy's stance on Ukraine
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated the United States is "responding to Russian aggression" by allowing Ukraine to use long-range ATACMS missiles, while Italy "made a different choice"
She made the comments on the sidelines of the G20 summit, according to Rai News.
Meloni explained that Washington's decision is a response to Russia's unprecedented aggression, especially ahead of the G20 summit where Russia is participating.
She also pointed out that Italy has focused on air defense instead, but understands the perspectives of other countries. However, Meloni stressed that Italy will continue to stand with Ukraine as long as Russian aggression continues.
Background
On the evening of November 17, reports emerged that U.S. President Joe Biden had authorized Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range American missiles.
By November 18, it was revealed that this permission to launch deep strikes using ATACMS missiles was limited to targets in the Kursk region.
Polish President Andrzej Duda described the decision as a potential "turning point in the war."
While the White House refrained from officially confirming this policy, it referenced its strong stance on Russian collaboration with North Korea.
Meanwhile, EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell clarified that the U.S. has allowed Ukraine to conduct strikes on Russian territory up to a range of 300 kilometers.
On November 19, U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, confirmed that President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use American weapons to strike Russian territory.
