U.S. State Department confirms Ukraine can strike Russia with American weapons
U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Brian Nichols, confirmed that President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use American weapons to strike Russian territory
The report comes from the Brazilian newspaper O Globo.
Nichols stated that the war in Ukraine could end immediately if Russia withdrew its troops and recognized Ukraine’s borders.
"The weapons authorized by President Biden give Ukraine stronger defensive capabilities and, ideally, will make the Russian Federation understand that seizing Ukrainian territory by force won’t work. Perhaps this will lead to peace talks—or, better yet, to a full Russian withdrawal from Ukrainian territory," the diplomat remarked.
Background
On the evening of November 17, reports emerged that US President Joe Biden had authorized Ukraine to strike Russian territory with long-range American missiles.
By November 18, it was revealed that this permission to launch deep strikes using ATACMS missiles was limited to targets in the Kursk region.
Polish President Andrzej Duda described the decision as a potential "turning point in the war."
While the White House refrained from officially confirming this policy, it referenced its strong stance on Russian collaboration with North Korea.
Meanwhile, EU Foreign Policy Chief Josep Borrell clarified that the US has allowed Ukraine to conduct strikes on Russian territory up to a range of 300 kilometers.
