Zelenskyy, Merz discuss air defense boost and Germany’s role in PURL initiative
On Wednesday, August 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in Berlin to discuss boosting defense support and strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses
The president reported the meeting on his Telegram channel, calling it important and substantive. He thanked Merz for supporting Ukraine and for organizing that day’s online events.
“We discussed our recent contacts with partners and further cooperation with allies, increasing defense support, Germany’s participation in the new PURL initiative, strengthening Ukraine’s air defenses with two additional Patriot systems and their missiles, and reliable security guarantees,” Zelenskyy said.
He added that as long as Russia shows no willingness for peace, pressure on it must be maintained and support for Ukraine must be increased.
Earlier, the German Bild reported the information and later presidential spokesman Serhii Nykyforov confirmed Zelenskyy's visit to Berlin.
"The President is working in Berlin today. There will be a bilateral meeting with Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, then they will jointly participate in a video conference with European leaders, NATO Secretary General Rutte, and US President Trump," the President's Office said.
As noted, Zelenskyy will conduct the call together with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
Following the meeting, around 4:00 p.m. Berlin time, statements by Zelenskyy and Merz to the media are possible. There will also be an online session of the Coalition of the Resolute today.
- The meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will take place on August 15 in Anchorage, Alaska, likely at a U.S. military base. But before that, senior officials from the U.S., Ukraine, and European countries are expected to hold talks to coordinate their positions.
- President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Alaska could be important only for bilateral relations between their countries — they cannot make any decisions about Ukraine.
