Ukraine identifies Russian soldiers behind deadly June 3 strike on Sumy

The press service of the Main Intelligence Directorate reported the information.

For the artillery strike, the Russian forces used a BM-21 Grad rocket battery from the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment (military unit 72162). The artillery positions of the regiment were located near the village of Apanasovka, Kursk region.

According to the Intelligence Directorate, the following military personnel from the 30th Regiment were directly involved in the criminal strike on Sumy:

• Damir Zhafarovich Garnaev, Artillery Chief of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel. Registered in Penza.
• Dmitry Alexandrovich Volobuyev, Commander of the Reactive Artillery Battery of the 30th Motorized Rifle Regiment, Captain. Resides in Samara.

Additionally, intelligence has identified that the commanders of the BM-21 Grad rocket systems at the time of the strike were Sergeant Ivanov A.O. and Private Panchenko S.A.

Details of the shelling

On June 3, 2025, Russian forces shelled the central part of Sumy using the BM-21 Grad rocket system. A total of 8 impacts were recorded.

As a result, six people were killed, and 30 were injured, including three children, the youngest of whom was three years old. A 17-year-old boy also died in the hospital.

Furthermore, as a result of the shelling, 16 buildings were damaged, including 15 apartment and private residential houses, Clinical Hospital No. 4, and railway tracks.
