Russian forces damage Kurakhove Reservoir dam, water floods villages
Russian forces have damaged the dam of the Kurakhove Reservoir, causing water levels to rise in villages along the Vovcha River
Vadym Filashkin, the head of the Donetsk Regional Military Administration, reports.
"The Russians damaged the dam of the Kurakhove Reservoir. This strike potentially threatens residents of settlements on the Vovcha River, both in the Donetsk and Dnipropetrovsk regions," he wrote.
According to him, as of 4:00 p.m, the water level in the river within the Velyka Novosilka community rose by 1.2 meters. No flooded homes have been reported so far.
"We continue to monitor the water level in the river and are ready for any development," the official emphasized.
Earlier, Roman Padun, the head of the Kurakhove City Military Administration, told Suspilne Donbas that the Russian army likely damaged the Kurakhove Reservoir dam, but it was hard to confirm due to ongoing shelling.
He added that there is evidence suggesting that water levels are rising near the settlements of the Velyka Novosilka community.
“We’ve received reports from other settlements in the Velyka Novosilka community that water is flowing as if the floodgates were opened. This suggests that the dam is likely damaged,” the official said.
Meanwhile, the publication Novyny Donbasa, citing emergency services, reported that the water level in the Vovcha River has risen by 1 meter. Depending on how badly the dam is damaged, there is a risk of partial flooding in settlements downstream, including Stari Terni, Ulakly, Konstantynopol, Andriivka, Oleksiivka, Bohatyr, Zelenyi Kut, Novoukrainka, and several settlements in Dnipropetrovsk region.
The number of people and private houses at risk is still unclear.
