Ukraine's Prosecutor General urges ICC action against Russia for Okhmatdyt attack
Ukraine's Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin appeals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) to hold Russia accountable for the missile strike on the children's hospital Ohmatdyt
Reuters reported the information.
"For the sake of international justice, cases like the intentional attack on the biggest child hospital in Kyiv (are) worth lifting to the ICC," Kostin said.
The Hague-based prosecutor general said that if the ICC were to look into the strike, it could help establish a pattern of attacks that show Russia is committing crimes against humanity in Ukraine.
Instead, the ICC prosecutor's office said that one of its teams had visited the site of the strike on the Okhmatdyt hospital. While the court has not publicly commented on what allegations it is investigating, it has warned that anyone found responsible for an attack on civilian objects could be held accountable.
Russian attack on Okhmatdyt children's hospital
On July 8, the Russian army attacked Kyiv with missiles. The attack resulted in numerous deaths. July 9 was declared a Day of Mourning in the capital.
Russia struck the children's hospital with a Kh-101 strategic cruise missile. At the site of the tragedy, fragments of the rear body of the missile with a serial number, as well as part of its rudder, were found.
As of Tuesday, July 9, emergency rescue operations on the territory of Okhmatdyt in Kyiv have been completed. As a result of the Russian attack, two people were killed and one was injured.
Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that UNICEF would provide financial assistance to the families affected by the attack on Okhmatdyt. He also said that the government would fully rebuild the hospital.
