“I was a little bit sarcastic” – Trump on his promise to end Ukraine war in 24 hours
US President Donald Trump said he was being somewhat sarcastic when he promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours during the election campaign. According to him, he meant that he would like to settle it
He said this in an interview with journalist Sharyl Attkisson.
Attkisson noted the difficulty of resolving a full-scale war in Ukraine, reminding Trump that he had promised to end it within 24 hours during his election campaign.
“Well, I was a little bit sarcastic when I said that. What I really meant was that I would like to get it settled, and I think I’ll be successful,” the American president replied.
He also commented on the journalist's question about the plan in case Russian leader Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire.
“I think he is going to agree... I know him pretty well, and I think he is going to agree,” Trump said.
30-day ceasefire proposal: what we know
On March 11, the Ukrainian and American delegations met in Jeddah, where Kyiv agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, and the United States agreed to resume intelligence sharing and security assistance.
Vladimir Putin's aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated that the 30-day ceasefire agreement is merely "a temporary respite for Ukrainian forces."
Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin stated that Russia agrees with the proposal to cease hostilities in Ukraine but emphasized that “this must lead to a long-term peace.”
During a meeting with NATO’s Mark Rutte, Trump called Putin’s 30-day ceasefire proposal promising but said it lacked key details.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is preparing to reject the proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.
