Putin says Russia agrees to ceasefire, but with conditions. Ukraine responds
Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin stated that Russia agrees with the proposal to cease hostilities in Ukraine but emphasized that “this must lead to a long-term peace”
This is reported by TASS.
According to Putin, Russia agrees with the proposals to halt fighting, but it must result in lasting peace and the “elimination of the causes” of the war in Ukraine.
Putin added that Russia supposedly supports a ceasefire but mentioned “nuances, including the Kursk region.” According to the dictator, Ukraine “benefits from securing a 30-day ceasefire while all its military forces in the Kursk region remain blocked.”
The Kremlin leader also claimed that Ukraine could use the 30-day truce to obtain weapons or conduct forced mobilization.
He also stated that he might call U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss the idea of a ceasefire.
“The idea of a ceasefire is correct, but there are issues that need to be discussed, particularly with the U.S.,” Putin added.
Ukraine’s reaction
Andrii Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation at Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, noted that the mention of “nuances” is typical of Russia’s behavior in international politics.
“It is important to understand that Russia’s information strategy will always aim to blame Ukraine for its own violations, make strange demands, and repeat the same tactics as during the Minsk agreements,” he wrote.
- On March 11, a meeting between Ukrainian and U.S. delegations took place in Jeddah, during which Kyiv agreed to a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, while the U.S. committed to resuming intelligence sharing and security assistance.
- Putin’s aide, Yuri Ushakov, stated that the 30-day ceasefire agreement is merely a temporary reprieve for Ukrainian forces.
