Polish Sejm adopts resolution in support of Ukraine's accession to NATO
The Polish Sejm has adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine's accession to NATO
It shared the information on Twitter.
"The Sejm has adopted a resolution on Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization," the statement said.
According to Polskie Radio, 443 deputies voted in favor of the resolution supporting Ukraine's membership in NATO, 2 against and 7 abstained.
All factions of the Polish Sejm expressed their support for the resolution, which stated that Ukraine's accession to NATO would strengthen the Alliance and meet the interests of Poland. The only opposing position was expressed by the pro-Russian Confederation party, which argued that such a step could lead to Poland's involvement in a global conflict.
The Chairman of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk also thanked the Sejm on Facebook.
"The Sejm of the Republic of Poland fully supports Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic aspirations. Thank you for adopting a resolution in support of Ukraine's accession to NATO," he said.
Stefanchuk also noted that the document states that today Ukraine is defending not only its statehood, but also common values, such as democracy and order based on international law.
"The upcoming summit in Vilnius is crucial for NATO-Ukraine relations and should be a place of debate on their future. The procedure for inviting Finland and Sweden to join the Alliance could be applied to Ukraine," the statement said.
The document states that the Sejm will support efforts to strengthen political and practical cooperation between the Alliance and Ukraine and to build a consensus on Ukraine's accession to NATO.
Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda called for Ukraine's accession to NATO, while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron called for security guarantees.
