During the 75th Summit of the North Atlantic Alliance, NATO leaders recognized that China has become a "decisive factor in the Russian war in Ukraine." Beijing reacted

This is stated in the final declaration of the NATO summit.

"The PRC has become a decisive enabler of Russia’s war against Ukraine through its so-called “no limits” partnership and its large-scale support for Russia’s defence industrial base," the declaration says.

They note that such actions by China increase the threat to both Ukraine and Euro-Atlantic security. NATO leaders called on Beijing to "cease all material and political support to Russia’s war effort," including the transfer of dual-use materials.

In addition, NATO stated that China continues to pose systemic problems for Euro-Atlantic security.

"We have seen sustained malicious cyber and hybrid activities, including disinformation, stemming from the PRC.  We call on the PRC to uphold its commitment to act responsibly in cyberspace," the statement said.

China's reaction

According to the Washington Post, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said that Beijing has a fair and objective position on the Ukrainian issue.

"NATO hyping up China's responsibility on the Ukraine issue is unreasonable and has sinister motives," the diplomat said.

At the same time, he emphasized that China's trade with Russia is legal and reasonable and based on the rules of the World Trade Organization. In addition, Beijing supports Russia's assertion that NATO expansion poses a threat to Russia.

"China urges NATO to ... stop interfering in China’s internal politics and smearing China’s image and not create chaos in the Asia-Pacific after creating turmoil in Europe," the official said.

  • On May 7, it was reported that Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to China (1999-2001), co-chairman of the Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council Ihor Lytvyn believes that China is not interested in Russia's war against Ukraine.
  • At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that China could play a huge role in ending Russia's war in Ukraine, as Moscow is highly dependent on the Chinese export market.
