Trump’s stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine may shift by end of April - diplomat
Volodymyr Yelchenko, a diplomat, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN (2015–2019) and Ambassador to the U.S. (2020–2021), noted that Trump aims to reach certain agreements on Russia’s war against Ukraine by early May to showcase results from the first 100 days of his presidency
He shared his opinions on Espreso TV.
“All of us continue to hope for the ‘magical’ date of April 20, just as we had for January 20 — Trump’s inauguration — that something will happen: if not the war ending, then at least serious moves toward a ceasefire. April 20 has become symbolic because of the promised ceasefire and the fact that it nearly coincides with the 100-day mark of President Trump’s term. After that point, the pressure on him will grow significantly — people will begin to ask what he has or hasn’t done in those first 100 days. Up to now, it was possible to blame Biden, but from now on, he will have to take responsibility for his own actions. So, by the end of April or early May, something will start to happen,” said Volodymyr Yelchenko.
The diplomat added that it’s hard to imagine what else Putin would need to do — after the strikes on Kryvyi Rih, Sumy, and other Ukrainian cities — for Trump and his advisors to realize that "it’s unacceptable to maintain friendly relations with the Russian dictator and terrorist" while the war isn’t even nearing its end, but instead escalating with intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian casualties.
- Earlier, Bloomberg reported that the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is likely aiming to reach a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine by Easter, which this year will be celebrated by both Orthodox and Catholic Christians on April 20.
- U.S. President Donald Trump said that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine may be going OK. However, he emphasized that there comes a time when one must either “put up or shut up.”
