Putin’s ambitions are barely disguised: Starmer calls on allies to offer Ukraine security guarantees
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has called on allies to increase pressure on Russia and provide security guarantees for Ukraine, as the ambitions of Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin are “barely disguised”
This is reported by The Guardian.
In particular, Starmer emphasized that he was not surprised by Moscow’s negative stance on the proposed 30-day ceasefire.
“It doesn’t entirely surprise me that Russia is taking this stance. They’ve made it pretty clear. They put it in lights a number of times over,” the UK Prime Minister explained.
At the same time, he stated that Russia’s reaction to the ceasefire proposal “reinforces my strong belief that if the deal is not defended with security guarantees, then he will breach it in due course.”
The Prime Minister also noted that after the negotiations between Ukraine and the U.S. in Saudi Arabia, “progress was made,” and he expressed hope that “that out of Tuesday that would put the ball in the Russian court, if you like, where the pressure would come on Russia.”
“We know that Putin has ambitions that are barely disguised,” Starmer added.
At the same time, the British government head outlined the next steps, emphasizing the need to work with allies, the U.S., and Kyiv.
“But it has to be a peace where the deal is defended, because we’ve had a deal before, and it’s not been maintained, because Russia just breaches the line,” Starmer said.
