Hungary may go bankrupt if Ukraine joins EU — PM Orbán
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán says that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would allegedly destroy the Hungarian economy. He claims that during the three years of war in Ukraine, Budapest has spent several billion euros
He said this on Kossuth Radio, as reported by Magyar Nemzet.
"The European People’s Party wants to bring Ukraine into the EU, which will destroy the Hungarian economy," the politician claims.
Orbán expressed concern that EU money is "being sent to Ukraine" instead of remaining within the EU.
"Money, including ours, is being carted off to Ukraine," the Prime Minister said.
Orbán stated that Brussels is proposing "to jointly take out a huge loan" to finance Ukraine, since EU leaders "know that on their own they are unable to support it." He emphasized the need to prevent Europe from going into debt.
"If it were worth it for Hungarians, they would support Ukraine’s membership," the head of government said.
Orbán called on all Hungarians to express their opinion on Ukraine’s accession to the EU and to take part in the national survey on this issue.
- Earlier, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Stefanishyna reported that Ukraine and Hungary will begin regular consultations from May 12 to remove all of Budapest’s reservations regarding the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU.
