Ukraine and Hungary agree on consultations to unblock EU talks
Ukraine and Hungary will begin regular consultations starting May 12 to resolve Budapest's concerns and open negotiations for Ukraine’s EU membership
This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Justice Minister Olha Stefanishyna, during a TV marathon.
Stefanishyna stated that teams from both countries would work on addressing 11 recommendations raised by Hungary.
"We agreed that from May 12, regular consultations will take place between the teams present in Budapest from both sides, until we define the tasks related to the eleven recommendations that concern Hungary," Stefanishyna said.
Ukraine has already provided its proposals and is now waiting for counterproposals from Hungary.
Stefanishyna expressed hope that the dialogue will help unblock the EU integration process.
"We expect to work on Hungary's counterproposals this week and, by May 12, hope to have intermediate results… I am hopeful that this dialogue will pave the way for unblocking the negotiation process," she said.
The official also added that the Ukrainian side has not heard any radical statements or negative remarks from Hungary today.
Ukraine's path to EU membership
On April 9, 2025, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stated that Ukraine has already fulfilled 81% of its obligations under the EU Association Agreement.
Deputy Prime Minister Stefanishyna assured that Ukraine will become an EU member by 2030, noting that the decision has essentially been made.
On April 11, Viktor Orbán stated that Hungary will not allow Brussels to force it to support Ukraine's EU membership.
