Europe's exclusion from talks impedes peace deal enforcement - EU top diplomat
EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas stated that Europeans will not be able to help implement a ceasefire agreement in the three-year full-scale war if Trump does not include them in the negotiation process
She said this in an interview with AFP during her visit to Washington, reports European Pravda.
Trump, who is expected to sign an agreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on minerals on Friday, refused to provide Ukraine with American security guarantees and stated that it is the Europeans' responsibility.
Kallas said that in any agreement regarding Ukraine, "Europeans must be on board."
"We must be part of these discussions. I believe that without this, we will not be able to ensure anything," she said.
In his speech at the White House on Wednesday, Trump also stated that the European Union was created to "deceive the United States" and announced plans for tariffs to address the trade deficit.
Kallas called Trump's statements "astonishing" and said that both sides have long shared common values.
She stated that Europe "won't be able to fill the gap left by America," but the world "is looking at us" to see what more can be done.
"I feel that we also need to increase our geopolitical strength," she said.
"If America turns inward, then Europe turns outward," added the head of European diplomacy.
- On Thursday, February 27, Russian and American representatives held talks in Istanbul for 6.5 hours to discuss issues related to the operation of their embassies.
