Zelenskyy slams Orban over anti-Ukraine remarks, dragging Ukraine into Hungarian elections
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for dragging Ukraine into Hungarian elections and doing "very dangerous things"
Zelenskyy said this during a conversation with journalists on Saturday, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine.
Commenting on Orban's statements about the impossibility of Ukraine's accession to the EU, the head of state recalled a poll of the Hungarian opposition, according to which “70% are in favor of Ukraine's accession to the EU” (in fact, almost 60% - Ed.).
According to Zelenskyy, the Hungarian prime minister's actions are related to dragging Ukraine into Hungary's domestic political struggle ahead of the upcoming 2026 elections.
"Just don't drag us into your elections. He (Orban – Ed.) is doing this by blocking us in the EU. Ultimately, this tactic will not be successful. Why? Because people there still support Ukraine," Zelenskyy is convinced.
The president also stated that Orban is doing "very dangerous things" for the European Union, and Ukraine is informing its partners about this.
"He may be against it, but he has no right to take steps to block our accession, because that is the choice of another state. Just as we have no right to interfere in Hungary's fate," he explained.
- On April 11, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that his country would not allow Brussels to pressure it into supporting Ukraine's EU membership.
- On May 2, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that Ukraine’s accession to the EU would allegedly destroy the Hungarian economy. He claims that during the three years of war in Ukraine, Budapest has spent several billion euros.
