US announces new sanctions against Iran for suppressing peaceful protests
The US government has announced new sanctions against high-ranking government officials in Tehran, as well as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran's elite security force that acts in the interests of the regime
This is stated in the official report of the Office of Foreign Assets Control of the US Treasury Department (OFAC).
"Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is designating Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Cooperative Foundation and five of its board members, the Deputy Minister of Intelligence and Security, and four senior IRGC commanders in Iran under human rights authorities," the document says.
In particular, the US Treasury Department's restrictions were imposed in connection with serious human rights violations related to the suppression of nationwide protests, as well as the persecution of dissent and opposition.
It is also noted that the sanctions are coordinated with the EU and the UK and target "the IRGC's key economic pillar" that finances most of the regime's brutal efforts.
