UN announced credible evidence of Russian use of cluster bombs in Ukraine
The UN Human Rights Office received "credible reports" of several cases of cluster munitions being used by Russian forces in populated areas of Ukraine.
This was stated by the press-secretary of the UN Office for Human Rights Liz Throssell, reports Reuters.
She noted that the indiscriminate use of such weapons could be considered war crimes.
"Due to their impact on a wide area of cluster munition use in populated areas, it is inconsistent with the principles of international humanitarian law governing the conduct of hostilities", Liz Throssell said in Geneva on Friday, March 11.
"We remind the Russian authorities that targeted attacks on the civilian population and civilian objects, as well as the so-called territorial bombing of towns and villages and other forms of indiscriminate attack are prohibited by international law and may be considered war crimes", the UN representative emphasized.
Asked about potential Facebook policy changes that would allow some users to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers, Throssell called it "disturbing" and said her office would raise the issue with the organization.
