Ukrainian polar researchers observe penguins returning to "Akademik Vernadskyi" station
A total of 600 penguins have made their way back to the Ukrainian Antarctic station, "Akademik Vernadskyi." Polar scientists view this as just the beginning of their return
This information comes from the National Antarctic Scientific Center.
The message reports, "Groups of black and white birds have been arriving at the Ukrainian station in large numbers, and the overall count on our Galindez Island has surged from 50 to 600 in recent days."
It's worth noting that due to the warmer climate, the timing of the penguins' return to the Antarctic station has shifted. The Antarctic spring typically begins in September. This year's weather is relatively warm, with an average air temperature of -5°C and water temperatures around -1.1°C. Moreover, there's minimal sea ice, which has prompted the penguins to return to their nesting grounds earlier. Consequently, they are expected to begin egg-laying earlier in the season.
Scientists point out, "The first nesting colonies of these heat-loving subantarctic penguins appeared in our Argentine Islands region in the late 2000s. Since then, the timing of their egg-laying has significantly shifted from late November to the beginning of the month."
