He said this in an interview with the Italian edition of Corriere della Sera.

Danilov was asked why Ukraine was holding Bakhmut, and the NSDC Secretary replied that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had to defend their cities because without Ukrainian resistance, Russia would have won the war.

“Since September 1, when Moscow started using convicts as mercenaries in Bakhmut, 22,816 people have died. Our losses were 7.5 times less. We have no right to surrender our cities,” he emphasized.

  • On May 20, the leader of the Russian Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, released a video with a statement about the alleged complete occupation of the Ukrainian city of Bakhmut by Russians.

  • According to Maliar, the enemy's offensive activity in the Bakhmut sector has stopped, but the occupying Russian forces have increased the number of artillery attacks.

  • On the morning of June 1, Prigozhin posted a video in which he said that most of his fighters were leaving for the rear areas from Bakhmut.

  • On June 2, Prigozhin stated that the escape routes from Bakhmut for his fighters were mined by representatives of the Russian Defense Ministry.

  • On June 3, it was reported that in Bakhmut, the Russian command was redeploying airborne troops to replace the Wagner Group's mercenaries.

  • Also on June 3, Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Maliar noted that the situation in Bakhmut was conditionally stable and added that the Wagner soldiers had not yet left the city.
