Ukrainian air force on Lviv night attack: Russia seeks to overcome air defense system, entire state’s territory is difficult to protect without F-16
Yuriy Ihnat, the AFU Air Force Command spokesman, noted that tonight, July 6, three groups of missiles targeted Lviv, and then they split up and each missile followed its own route
He stated this on Espreso.
"The enemy is trying different methods to overcome our air defense system. To avoid entering the areas where our air defense is effective, the enemy chooses specific routes for their missiles or kamikaze drones, taking advantage of the terrain and riverbeds. They fly at low altitudes to hide from our radars. This is a common tactic employed by the enemy. They may initially fly west and then change direction to the east. Tonight, there were three groups of missiles heading towards Lviv. They split up and each missile followed its own route. Unfortunately, we lack the means to destroy enemy missiles throughout Ukraine. The anti-aircraft missile forces are the main defense against cruise missiles and drones at night, making it challenging to neutralize them with aircraft or mobile fire groups," he said.
Yuriy Ihnat further stated that our pilots face difficulties in targeting such threats because our Soviet-era fighters, which were designed in the 1970s, are not capable of intercepting Shahed drones or similar missiles.
"That's why we need F-16s to effectively protect Ukraine's large territory. When tracking missile routes, one or two fighters can intercept and destroy enemy targets in the air. As the targets approach cities, our anti-aircraft systems, such as the anti-aircraft missile systems, come into play. It is hoped that we will acquire more Western systems like NASAMS and IRIS-T, which can provide effective anti-aircraft missile coverage. The constant presence of F-16s is crucial, as they not only protect Ukraine's airspace but can also gain air superiority in the occupied territories, supporting our troops' advancements. It's worth noting that these aircraft are equipped with harpoon missiles capable of targeting the Russian Black Sea Fleet, from which the ten missiles were launched tonight," noted Ihnat.
