EU will align temporary protection policy for Ukrainians with Ukraine’s government — Commissioner Brunner
The European Union will not make any decisions regarding the temporary protection status of refugees from Ukraine without consulting with the official Kyiv authorities
According to Ukrinform, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner stated at a press conference, following the EU Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs in Luxembourg, that the EU aimed to remain flexible in this matter at the request of the Ukrainian side, which expressed a clear desire for its citizens to eventually return and contribute to the country's reconstruction.
Brunner recalled that the temporary protection regime has been extended for the fourth time, with active involvement from Ukrainian authorities throughout the process.
He emphasized that he remains in constant contact with Ukrainian officials, including a recent meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Oleksiy Chernyshov.
Although only a political agreement on the extension has been announced so far, Brunner assured that this is sufficient, as the decision has already been agreed upon with the Ukrainian side.
- On June 13, the European Union's Internal Affairs Council decided to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians until March 4, 2027.
