EU extends temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2027
On Friday, June 13, in Luxembourg, the Council of the European Union for Internal Affairs decided to extend the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainians until March 4, 2027
The decision was reported by the EU Council’s press service, as cited by European Pravda.
In addition to the immediate extension of the protection period, the Council also held discussions on potential next steps following the directive’s eventual expiration. According to the report, once temporary protection ends, Ukrainian citizens should either be granted a new legal status allowing them to remain in their host country or be able to return to Ukraine.
The final and formal adoption of the extension will take place in the coming weeks, pending the completion of technical procedures such as translation of official documents. Similarly, recommendations for member states regarding future actions will be approved with a slight delay for the same reasons.
- As of the end of January 2025, almost 4.3 million Ukrainians had temporary protection in EU countries.
