Ukraine negotiating with U.S. to purchase weapons amid aid uncertainty, says MFA
Heorhiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, says Ukrainian diplomats are talking with the U.S. to ensure American weapons continue to be supplied even after the Biden administration's promised aid ends
He stated this during a briefing, RBC-Ukraine reports.
Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi addressed questions about the timeline for the end of U.S. military aid. He recommended consulting the military for specific schedules, as they possess detailed information. However, Tykhyi underscored that Ukraine is actively discussing the possibility of purchasing American weapons from the United States.
"I can emphasize that, first of all, Ukraine is actively discussing buying American weapons from the United States," the spokesperson stated. "Ukraine is ready to purchase American weapons, especially air defense systems like Patriot, and other equipment we've received from the U.S. over the years."
He added that these American weapons could be bought using various funding sources. This includes money from the recovery investment fund, which is part of the minerals agreement. This agreement, he noted, specifically allows for compensation through weapons.
"I will risk assuring the Ukrainian public that Ukrainian diplomacy is working and doing everything to ensure that American weapons arrive. And I am convinced that we will be able to find modalities, solutions that will allow us to receive the necessary American weapons, equipment, licenses there, if necessary, and other things. And work on this is ongoing," Tykhyi concluded.
- On June 4, it was reported that the U.S. had not yet approved decisions on future assistance to Kyiv, since American leader Donald Trump is interested in ending Russia's war against Ukraine.
