U.S. seizes another Russian 'shadow fleet' tanker in Caribbean
The United States detained another tanker from the Russian shadow fleet, Sagitta, in the Caribbean Sea on January 21
The U.S. Southern Command reported the information.
"The apprehension of another tanker operating in defiance of President Trump’s established quarantine of sanctioned vessels in the Caribbean demonstrates our resolve to ensure that the only oil leaving Venezuela will be oil that is coordinated properly and lawfully," the military stated.
Meanwhile, the War&Sanctions website clarifies that the tanker Sagitta transports oil in circumvention of sanctions. Specifically, Washington imposed economic restrictions against it on January 10, 2025.
"The tanker, during the G7+ embargo and price-cap policy on Russian oil/petroleum products, participates in the export of Russian oil/petroleum products from Russian ports in the Baltic Sea, the Pacific region predominantly to China and India, engages in the practice of disabling AIS signals, and conducts so-called 'dark activity' at sea," the website states.
On the morning of January 7, the U.S. detained the sanctioned oil tanker M/T Sophia in the Caribbean Sea.
