U.S. prepares new sanctions against Russia, Trump’s support remains uncertain
American officials have completed the development of new economic sanctions against Russia; however, it is unknown whether the new sanctions package will be approved by U.S. President Donald Trump
Reuters reported the information, citing its own sources among American officials.
The sanctions are aimed at Russia’s banking and energy sectors. In particular, the targets include the state-owned Russian energy giant Gazprom, as well as large companies involved in the natural resources and banking sectors. Other details are currently unknown.
The publication points out that it is still unclear whether U.S. President Donald Trump will approve these sanctions.
"The U.S. National Security Council is trying to coordinate some set of more punitive actions against Russia. This will have to be signed off by Trump," one of the sources said.
The U.S. Treasury Department, which implements most American sanctions, did not respond to a request for comment.
- On April 24, Politico wrote that the White House was allegedly discussing lifting sanctions from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The State Department denied this.
