Hungary threatens to block EU sanctions against Russia ahead of March 15 deadline
Hungary has once again refused to support the extension of European Union sanctions against Russia, putting their renewal at risk as the March 15 deadline approaches
European Pravda reported the information, citing multiple EU diplomats familiar with the negotiations.
During a meeting of EU ambassadors (Coreper II) in Brussels on March 10, Hungary opposed the renewal of individual sanctions against Russia, which require unanimous approval from all 27 member states. These measures target over 2,400 individuals and entities involved in undermining Ukraine’s territorial integrity. While the other 26 EU nations back the extension, Hungary remains the sole holdout.
Diplomatic sources warn that if the sanctions are not renewed by March 15, they will expire, effectively lifting restrictions on those sanctioned. However, some diplomats express optimism that Hungary may reverse its stance at the last minute, as it has done in previous cases.
The next EU ambassadors’ meeting on the matter is scheduled for March 12, with a final opportunity to extend the sanctions set for March 15.
