57 journalists killed, 45 injured since full-scale war began in Ukraine
Since the start of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, 57 journalists have been killed, including eight international reporters
This figure comes from Oleksii Boniuk, Head of the Department of Criminal Law Policy and Investment Protection at the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office, who spoke at a briefing.
According to him, another 45 media workers have been injured. Among the injured are 25 foreign journalists.
The Prosecutor General's Office initiated 107 cases for war crimes against journalists.
“Since 2022, we’ve created a new category for war crimes against journalists. Twenty journalists have been illegally detained or imprisoned, one is still in captivity, and one is missing. This is based on official investigations and forms the basis of specific cases,” Boniuk stated.
He added that some cases have already gone to court.
“We already have several verdicts, with four indictments against nine individuals in special proceedings. Of these nine, three have been sentenced: one to nine years and two to twelve years in prison,” Boniuk said.
- Ukraine’s Institute of Mass Information estimates that Russian aggression claimed the lives of 96 media workers since 2014.
