Russian Tu-22M3 bomber destroyed in drone attack
Russia suffers major loss as key Tu-22M3 long-range bomber is successfully targeted in a drone strike
Defense Express writes about this.
A recent drone strike at the Soltsy Russian air base has caused severe damage to the valuable Tu-22M3 bomber, a carrier of Kh-22 and Kh-32 missiles. The attack also links to previous bombardments on Mariupol and another incident in December 2022 at the Dyagilevo air base.
“The aftermath photo portrays the Tu-22M3 engulfed in flames, with only the nose section remaining intact on the ground. This destruction marks a significant and irreparable blow, as the central part of the aircraft has been consumed by the fire. Despite an estimated 60 Tu-22M3s in Russia, not all are operational,” the article says.
The strike occurred yesterday around 10 a.m., employing drone-type aircraft launched in proximity to the airbase. The Russian Defense Ministry acknowledged "damage," which, in reality, means complete fiery annihilation.
The image reveals two prominent aspects: the extensive flames indicating fuel involvement and a crew ladder leading to the cockpit. This implies a potential enemy ambush during take-off preparation. Unconfirmed data suggests two planes hit, but photographic evidence is currently available for just one.
This is not the first drone attack on Russian air bases hosting Tu-22M3s. In December 2022, a similar assault at the Dyagilevo air base left another Tu-22M3 severely impaired, with notable tail and engine damage, questioning the aircraft's future viability.
